In a true demonstration of the National Reconciliation Week theme ‘Be a Voice for Generations’, the week saw 12 members of the Australian Girls Choir travel to Carnarvon and join with students from Carnarvon Community College in a week of singing, dancing, performing and cultural learning.
While our annual Travel Programs see girls from Carnarvon, as well as Bidyadanga, Halls Creek, Kowanyama and Lockhart River travel to a capital city, our Reverse Travel Program saw Australian Girls Choir choristers from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney travel to Carnarvon.
Girls from Oz has been in partnership with Carnarvon Community College since 2013 so in this, our eleventh year working in the community, we’re excited to have had AGC choristers participate in workshops at the College, camp out on Country, sightsee with the Carnarvon Youth and perform on multiple occasions including at a Reconciliation Concert at Gwoonwardu Mia–Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre.
This touring opportunity is such a valuable two-way learning experience and what better time for it than National Reconciliation Week?
The AGC choristers took every opportunity they had to build relationships with the Carnarvon girls and to learn about Country and culture and we hope that the Carnarvon girls were motivated by the confidence that the AGC girls bring to their performances and that they take their own participation to the next level as a result.
We believe that shared experiences like our annual Travel Programs and this Captivating Carnarvon Tour are key to us achieving our reconciliation aims. As the song says, ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’.
