On Tuesday November 14, eight girls in Years 7-10 fro Carnarvon Community College travelled to Melbourne to engage in a week-long itinerary designed to highlight employment and education opportunities, as well as offer performing arts experiences.
Hosted by generous families from the Australian Girls Choir (AGC), Rachelle, Kasey, Mackenzi, Shanti, Kate, Larianah, Haylie and Vickiesha enthusiastically reported back to their new ‘respect sisters’ each day about the week’s highlights, including:
- A visit to the Wilin Centre at the Victorian College of the Arts and time with American hip hop group Arrested Development,
- A dance workshop with contemporary dance company Chunky Move,
- A morning tea with, and intimate performance for the Australian School of Performing Arts staff,
- A mentoring session with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) and a choral workshop with students from Presbyterian Ladies College, and also
- Involvement in two performances at Hamer Hall with the Australian Girls Choir.
AGC host parent, Cathy Wever, spoke of the mutual benefits to come out of hosting the girls.
“We really loved having these two gorgeous girls stay with us and appreciated the chance to get to know them and learn a bit about their very different lives in Carnarvon. The girls were wonderful guests in our home – friendly, polite, warm and chatty… It was also an enormous pleasure to see the girls perform at Hamer Hall – they were absolutely brilliant and we know from the car trip home how much they loved the experience of performing on stage and in front of such a large and appreciative audience.”
We’re so proud to have watched the girls grow throughout the week, perform with such poise and maturity and become completely absorbed in each and every opportunity presented to them.
