2025 Term 4 g-oz Community Program News
What a fantastic way to wrap up our 2025 programming!
Congratulations to all g-oz participants for your enthusiastic participation and exceptional effort this term.
A huge thank you to our 12 incredible g-oz Instructors who delivered our Term 4 g-oz classes from October 20 to November 7.
Lockhart River
Lots of singing and dancing from the very first day at Lockhart State School! All students brought fantastic focus and energy to each and every class. We were thrilled to see such high participation across all levels and to witness the remarkable growth in students’ confidence over the year, especially in this last term:
“It was wonderful to see the consistency of g-oz visits paying off in Lockhart River. The rapport between instructors and the school community was really strong. Seeing Grade 6s who I first met in Kindy joining in for their last g-oz sessions was bittersweet and very special! The confidence and participation was exactly what we’d hoped for.”
– Claire, Term 4 Lockhart River g-oz Instructor
The week was full of fun and excitement with Grade 1 and 2s loving REDed’s ‘Chihuahua’ dance as led by Claire; Grade 5s singing ‘Rather Be’ loud and proud as participants prepare for their Travel Program performance; and a lovely afternoon playing some games together on the oval!
Kowanyama
There were endless smiles and giggles this term during our g-oz Kowie classes! Grade 1 participants had an absolute ball practising their ‘character’ singing, resulting in non-stop laughing during the entire class! They also loved learning the ‘Rocketship’ dance across the week.
With the g-oz Travel Program commencing next week, participants were focussed and dedicated as they rehearsed their repertoire in preparation for their performance on stage at the Sydney Opera House alongside the Australian Girls Choir:
“Working with the Travel Program participants was an absolute joy. I was blown away by the strength and pride with which they were singing. Bumping into a previous Travel Program participant in community was a real highlight. It was so lovely to hear her reflect on how much she enjoyed the trip and how she grew in confidence over the week. She told me she is still in touch with a friend from Bidyadanga and can’t wait to go back to Sydney one day.”
– Bonnie, Term 4 Kowanyama g-oz Instructor
Halls Creek
From 3 November to 7 November, g-oz was back in the Kimberley! Laura, Tash and Lily spent an exciting week at Halls Creek District High School with a wonderful addition of a few Warlawurru (Red Hill) School students joining in for a session of singing and dancing together.
The week was full of song, dance and performing arts activities from counting songs with the Kindy kids; songs about zooming up to the moon with the Grade 1/2s; and some exceptional work from the older students working on their percussion and rhythmic skills.
The Halls Creek g-oz Travel Program cohort rehearsed beautifully throughout the week, practising their ‘Rather Be’ lyrics while standing tall with confidence as they prepared for their Sydney Opera House performance:
“I was particularly proud to see the senior girls get up and perform in front of their peers at assembly, which was no easy feat. Hearing them sing ‘You can’t shame me’ was particularly meaningful and really inspiring to watch.” – Tash, Term 4 Halls Creek g-oz Instructor
Bidyadanga
Term 4 in Bidydanga saw g-oz Instructors Rachel, Hallie and Juliette visit La Grange Remote Community School for an action-packed week of singing, dancing and community activities.
Pre-Prep and Grade 1 participants sang ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’ with excitement and enthusiasm while Grade 5 and 6 participants learnt a three-part harmony to ‘Nanuma’, singing so beautifully together. On the Wednesday afternoon, the Travel Program participants performed their Sydney Opera House song ‘Rather Be’ at community assembly to a supportive and impressed crowd – well done, girls!
A wonderful highlight from the week was a beautiful evening shared with students and community – singing, yarning and sharing a meal together, including a group sing-a-long of ‘Country Tells Us When’. g-oz Year 9 participant Dorah led the audience, demonstrating the actions to each line for everyone to learn. Thank you, Dorah!
g-oz was then treated to a special performance by Bidyadanga’s ‘Old Girls’ who sang ‘I Am Australian’ in Bidyadanga’s five local languages: Karajarri, Mangala, Juwaliny, Nyangumarta and Yulparija.
“An absolute highlight was the community sing, where many of the older girls came out to perform a few songs they have been working on throughout the year and sing new songs with their community. It was really great to see music bring so many people together for a very special night!” – Juliette, Term 4 g-oz Bidydanga Instructor
