March Trips

In our eighth year in Halls Creek, sixth in Carnarvon and second in Lockhart River, our March performing arts intensives have been a fantastic success!

Carnarvon Community College Principal Michael Henderson encouraged participants to “leave their shame at the door” and step out of their comfort zone to engage in a program of song, dance and drama throughout the week. We carried this sentiment through to our girls in Lockhart River, who enthusiastically performed for classmates and their local community at the end of week assembly, reducing many audience members to tears. In Halls Creek, we worked with women from the Kimberley Language Resource Centre to determine which songs to translate into Jaru and Kija, the local Halls Creek languages, for the girls to perform later this year.

g-oz Program Director Kylie visited Carnarvon and Halls Creek, speaking with Goolarri Radio and ABC Kimberley about the noticeable growth in confidence of our participants, many of whom are moving into their fifth consecutive year as g-oz girls. She spoke of the visible changes that were shining through in our participants, such as increased confidence to put a hand up in class and answer a question, and even feeling brave enough to sing at a school assembly.

Our next trips are scheduled for early May and we can’t wait to return to Carnarvon, Halls Creek and Lockhart River!
